Marc Mondavi Wine Dinner at Oliver’s Restaurant

October 2014

California wine legend Marc Mondavi blew into town earlier this month to a chorus of a million corks being pulled over the unmistakable sound of an epic guitar solo. He was a perfect gentleman, and as expected, incredibly knowledgeable and engaging. The Mondavi Family is credited with bringing worldwide recognition to the wines of Napa Valley, and for good reason; their bottlings are absolutely stellar. The Charles Krug winery is the oldest winery operating in Napa Valley, carefully overseen by Marc Mondavi, his brother Peter Jr., and their father, Peter Sr.

If having one of Napa Valley’s favorite sons in town wasn’t reward enough, Oliver’s Restaurant once again set a new bar for area cuisine, creating a menu that excelled both in presentation and flavor. The dishes were a perfect compliment to the wine, with nary an odd combination in sight. The staff at Oliver’s Restaurant are gracious hosts, exceptionally accommodating, and perhaps more importantly, quick to refill empty glasses. If you were able to attend, we’re pleased to have been able to share such an exciting evening with you.

T. Edward Wine Dinner at CoCo

September 2014

If your memory stretches back to September, you might recall a fantastic evening you spent at CoCo Bar & Bistro sampling excellent wines provide by T. Edwards. These wines almost certainly paired outrageously well with the multi-course meal prepared by the talented staff at CoCo, and you went home feeling reinvigorated and ready for life’s myriad challenges. If none of that sounds familiar to you, we’ve put together this handy photo gallery to jog your memory. If you’re still at a loss after browsing, we may have to consider the possibility you did not attend. Next time!

Suzy-Q’s Bar-B-Que Shack

June 2014

For our 3rd Annual Bourbon & BBQ event, Gates Circle Wine & Liquor returned to Suzy-Q’s Bar-B-Que Shack, a fantastic smokehouse you’d think was ripped straight out of the south and deposited near the banks of the Niagara River. If you missed the event, or you’ve never paid Suzy a visit, grab yourself some pulled pork and pour a glass or two of whiskey. We recommend Smooth Ambler Rye, and maybe a little Smooth Ambler Straight Bourbon to switch things up. These whiskies both come from West Virginia, perfectly illustrating that great American spirits don’t have to come from Kentucky.

If by now you’ve run out of pulled pork, perhaps give Suzy-Q’s another visit and grab something, anything, with the smoky flavor you can no longer live without. Also, provided you’re ready to put the Smooth Ambler back in the liquor cabinet, you might consider moving on to Jefferson’s Reserve Very Old Bourbon, or even Calumet Farm Bourbon, just to remind yourself how good the stuff from Kentucky can be. Once you hit the dessert course, bring it back home with some Catskill Provisions New York Honey Whiskey, an infusion of real wildflower honey into Finger Lakes Distilling Rye. It doesn’t get much better than that.
